Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET)
In July, the downward slide in R-PET prices appears to have stalled somewhat as costs stabilised and sales were quite flat. R-PET clear flake and clear food-grade pellet prices were unchanged from the previous month, while coloured flake prices fell by €10-20/tonne because of weak demand.
The beverages sector was approaching its peak in July, although sales remained better than expected; logistics sector demand has however taken a dip during the summer months. European recyclers continue to produce at normal levels; imports from Asia appear to have slackened.
This month, R-PET clear food-grade pellets and R-PET clear flake prices are up by €10-15/tonne; R-PET coloured flake prices are stable. Recyclers’ price push is supported by the rising cost of primary material and the higher cost of bottle scrap. Furthermore, the beverage sector has maintained demand at a normal level this month as temperatures soared across Europe.
Recycled high-density polyethylene (R-HDPE)
In July, high-quality R-HDPE coloured blow moulding pellet prices and high-quality black injection moulding pellet prices fell by €10/tonne; lower-quality grade prices slipped by €40-50/tonne The start of the holiday season further depressed the already low demand situation. Stock levels at some recyclers have risen as a result of the low sales volumes.
In August, R-HDPE blow moulding material prices were rolled over but prices for higher quality black injection moulding grades increased slightly mainly because of higher input costs. Recyclers continued to run their plants at reduced rates; demand remained low.
Recycled low-density polyethylene (R-LDPE)
In July, R-LDPE prices were largely rolled over in line with virgin material prices: translucent product prices softened slightly. With costs falling and demand low, suppliers have maintained output in line with the low order intake. The start of the holiday season dampened the prevailing weak demand situation.
This month, prices for natural R-LDPE film and translucent material increased by €10/tonne while prices for all other R-LDPE grades were rolled over. The increase in the price for higher quality grades was helped by a rise in the cost of primary material. Demand was low during the peak of the holiday season.
Recycled polypropylene (R-PP)
The downward pressure on R-PP prices eased somewhat in July as producers curbed output even further in order to balance production with the stubbornly low demand prevailing across most end-use sectors. R-PP producers even managed to nudge prices slightly higher for the higher quality grades.
R-PP prices are unchanged in August in a balanced market with discounts given only for large orders. Recyclers continued to operate their plants at reduced rates; demand remained low.
Recycled high-impact polystyrene (R-HIPS)
R-HIPS black pellet prices fell €10-20/tonne in July as a result of the falling cost of virgin material and weak demand. There was no sign of a pick-up in R-HIPS demand across most end-user sectors. Recyclers ran their lines at reduced rates in response to the low demand.
R-HIPS prices are mostly being rolled over this month. There was less price pressure following a surge in the cost of primary material in August while input costs were high. Discounts were only given for large orders.
