The Memorandum of Understanding is the first of its kind in the region

The Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) and the GCC Accreditation Center (GAC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate in conformity assessment and accreditation. They also intend to develop sustainable solutions to help establish a robust quality infrastructure in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, which comprises Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The MoU will establish a framework that aims to improve the efficiency of conformity assessment processes in the region and ensure that chemical and petrochemical products and processes meet specified standards and regulations. Additionally, it is aimed at streamlining accreditation procedures and fostering conformity across various certification activities. The agreement will also involve the adoption of a management scheme for plastic pellets, flakes, and power to address leakage of plastic waste into marine environments.

The GAC provides accreditation services within the GCC region, with the aim of enhancing product safety, develop industries, and facilitate trade exchange. So far, the centre has accredited more than 354 bodies, in the fields of Halal certification, testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, amongst others.

“This Memorandum of Understanding… reflects our joint dedication to fostering excellence and sustainability in the chemical and petrochemical industry within the GCC region,” said Eng. Moteb Al-Mezani, director general of GAC. “Together, we will pave the way for a future marked by accountability, transparency, and compliance, ensuring that our industry meets the highest standards and contributes to a cleaner, more environmentally responsible world.”
